Film Review: The Kitchen

An interesting film, far more violent that I expected. A good (not great) story, with decent performances from the three leads. Elizabeth Moss is fantastic as you would expect, and Tiffany Haddish and Elizabeth McCarthy both turn in strong performances. A solid 7.0/10.0

Film Review: Hustlers

An entertaining film, with a great performances by Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu. It’s a pretty slow burn, a character piece rather than plot driven, but I liked it. I give this an enjoyable 7.5/10.0.

Film Review: Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

A wonderful demonstration of the cinematographer’s art, full of vibrancy and colour, evoking a tangible feeling of the 1960s. However, it’s also not a conherent story, very flabby at the start (30-40 minutes could have been cut easily), and with a typically tangential ending. There are clearly different stories in this movie, only linked together in the most tenuous of...

Film Review: Angel Has Fallen

The reviews I’d seen of this film before going to the cinema were pretty poor. Actually, it’s quite an entertaining film! It was exactly what I expected, with Gerard Butler doing a decent job, and Morgan Freeman as great as ever. The writing is fine (though saying that, you will work out the plot, and who is good and bad,...

Film Review: Fast and Furious 8: Hobbs and Shaw

A cheap, weak film, with terrible special effects that would only be credible to the youngest of children. It has only the most nebulous of link to the Fast and Furious franchise, and as such shows itself to be a shameless attempt to make money from it. A waste (and this is saying something) of the talents of The Rock...

Film Review: The Red Sea Diving Resort

A strong cast leads this based-on-a-true-story film. Chris Evans, the always excellent Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar comin’, yo), and Ben Kingsley of course. Tense, touching, exciting, this is an entertaining film that will at the end leave you with tears in your eyes. I enjoyed this film, and give it 7.0/10.0

Film Review: Stuber

Very funny, a surprise hit. Both leads are fantastic, with Kumail Nanjiani steeling the show from Dave Bautista as you would expect. Natalie Morales is good as always. I laughed out loud a lot. This is a strong 8.5/10.0

Film Review: Anna

Okay, a fun film oddly cast, with a mis-match of talent. Sasha Luss’s performance (really great at action, not so great at dialogue or expression) is put firmly into shadow by her highly skilled peers, Luke Evans and Cillian Murphy. And Helen Mirren? What on earth was she doing in this movie? Helen Mirren is awesome, a giant of the...

Film Review: Yesterday

What a great, feel good movie! There is a cracking cast, especially the two leads, Himesh Patel and Lily James. They work particularly well together, and there is great comic relief from Joel Fry. This movie is funny and tender, and great if you are a Beatles fan! There are some flaws in the plot if you look too closely,...

Film Review: Godzilla, King of the Monsters

Cliched, tired, appalling writing. This film is an affront to film makers worldwide, and if it makes a profit (I’m sure it will) it will be yet another nail in the coffin of well-made, intelligent films. If people keep going to see this nonsense (yes, I know, I went to see it so I could write this review) the studios...
