Film Review: Us

A movie of two halves: the first was tense, scary, paced well; the second half was a mad jumble of incoherent nonsense, as if the director got bored halfway through and abandoned the script. The contrast with his previous outing, Get Out, couldn’t be more clear. This is a poor follow-up, instantly forgettable. I give this movie 2.0/10.0

Film Review: Shazam!

This was great fun. Starring the excellent Zachary Levi, who is a very engaging, entertaining actor, in a feel good movie in the old school way: funny, exciting, madcap, uplifting. I give this this a well-deserved 7.5/10.0

Film Review: Can You Ever Forgive me?

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Melissa McCarthy is excellent, and Richard E Grant is his usual larger than life self. A little bittersweet, and more about loneliness than I expected, extremely well paced and well written, with great supporting actors. I give this film 8.5/10.0

Film Review: The Mule

Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper are both great actors, and I have enjoyed almost all of their movies. Clint Eastwood is, well, Clint Eastwood, and that’s always a good thing. There is a great chemistry between the two of them, and they work a well written script to good effect. This is a well paced movie, bittersweet, and it reminds...

Film Review: The Favourite

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It feels like a madcap art-house movie, every character is a caricature, every scene odd in some way, unsettling cinematography, and absolutely fantastic performances. Olivia Coleman absolutely deserved the awards she received for this film, and it’s just a shame that Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz weren’t similarly recognised. I give this film 9.0/10.0.

Film Review: Stan and Ollie

Sometimes a film comes along with the perfect mix of fine actors, great story, humour, sadness, and drama. This film has it all. John C. Riley and Steve Coogan gave absolutely stellar performances, and Nina Arianda and Shirley Henderson were excellent as always. This is a bittersweet film, made all the more so by performances so good you often forget...

Film Review: Mortal Engines (2018)

Stupid plot, over-acted, Mary Poppins accents, Illogical technology. Embarrassing to watch.   I give this film a well deserved 1.0/10.0.

Film Review: Creed II (2018)

I really liked the first Creed movie, it was a great reboot, with tight writing and great characters. This is more of the same. It’s well written, with rounded characters and back story. Even Dolph Lungdren’s character gets a back-story makeover, and while the film definitely skirted cheesy, it never stepped over the line. Even a dodgy cameo by Brigitte...

Film Review: The Girl In The Spider’s Web (2018)

What a shame. This could have been great, but instead it’s cliche-ridden, predictable, with poor, lazy writing. A waste of Claire Foy’s talent. I give this 4.0/10.0

Film Review: Overlord (2018)

D-Day you say? A classic war film maybe? With our plucky heroes ordered to blow up a Radar station so our brave boys can get ashore on the Normandy beaches? What, Nazi Zombies as well?!?! I’m in! J.J.Abrams is a master of the tightly-paced, tension-filled, absolutely-terrifying-while-simultaneously-complete-nonsense horror-thriller, and this is another one to add to the collection. Is it great...
