Film Review: Midway

This is a WWII movie of the old school. It has the feel of 1960s war movies, and that is not a compliment. Cliche-ridden, with appalling dialogue and sterotypical heroes and villains, it is carried by spectacular special effects (planes, ships, and explosions) and surprisingly sometimes hampered by some truly amateurish and appalling special effects. This movie is terrible cinema,...

Film Review: The Aeronauts

I am not great with heights. I have a particular fear of air balloons. In hindsight this was not the best movie for me to see. However, it’s a great film, with Felicity Jones stealing the show. Eddie Redmayne is good, but really just there as a foil for Felicity. It’s a fantastically well paced film, with horrifyingly well-done special...

Film Review: Terminator – Dark Fate

Lots of silly nonsense in this movie, none of which detracts from a throughly enjoyable, well paced movie with cracking set pieces and special effects. Having Linda Hamilton and Arnie back on screen is always enjoyable. A great fun 7.5/10.0

Film Review: Official Secrets

Great performances by a great cast. Enjoyed this film a lot, although left the cinema even more disgusted with our political class than I was before. An enraged 8.0/10.0

Film Review: Zombieland – Double Tap

Another film with bad reviews, but actually not bad. While not as good as the first one, it still maintains a lot of the humour and madcap storylines. Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone are matched by a very funny Zoey Deutch, and always good Jesse Eisenberg. Rosario Dawson, Luke Wilson and Thomas Middleditch are also very funny. An enjoyable comedic...

Film Review: Gemini Man

Well… the reviews for this were universally bad, so I went to the cinema with low expectations. What a pleasant surprise! I quite enjoyed this film, it has a good pace, some interesting ideas, and a few funny parts. Now, to be fair, the special effects are really appalling in places, and some the writing (or possibly editing) are lacking...

Film Review: Joker

A deeply dark film, chronicling the mental illness of Arthur from years of abuse as a child, lack of support from his mother, and abandonment by his father. It’s difficult to know what is real in the film, and what is Arthur’s fantasy. Deeply disturbing, but powerful. An unsettling 8.5/10.0

Film Review: Ready Or Not

What a crazy, funny, gory, ridiculous, tense, jumpy, nonsense of a film. It takes the trope of the “trapped in a house and someone is trying to kill me” and merges it with the (cracking) idea of the 1%-ers being pawns of Satan, and gives us a really dark, really funny, slapstick of a movie. This won’t be for everyone,...

Film Review: Ad Astra

Hmmm… an odd one this. The science is interesting, but largely uneventful and boring; the family drama is also largely uneventful and boring. There are no peaks to the story or the drama, it just plods on at a slow pace that leaves you not bored, but not particularly entertained either. The best I can say is that I didn’t...

Film Review: Rambo – Last Blood

You know those films that get universally terrible reviews, but when you go to see them you have a great time, and you marvel about how anyone could think otherwise? This isn’t one of those films. What a stinker. Terrible writing, direction so poor it looks like a cinematography student’s final year project, and even Sylvester Stallone looked bored, turning...
