Film Review: Parasite

What a refreshing change of pace! A fantastic foreign language movie getting well deserved recognition. The casting is fantastic, the writing tight and clever, the humour comic and dark. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. A well deserved 8.5/10.0.

Film Review: The Lighthouse

How to describe this movie? Homage to 1940s mystery cinema? Drug-fuelled nightmare. Just plain weird? All of those things. I’m sure it’s trendy in an emporer’s-new-clothes kind of way to say this is an awesome film and “not something the general film goer will appreciate”, but I think this is an indulgent turd. A very disappointing and disturbing 3.0/10.0.

Film Review: Queen and Slim

A good film, tough subject matter, powerful, left me feeling uneasy. Great cast and performances. A difficult 8.0/10.0.

Film Review: Bad Boys For Life

Ah nostalgia! This is not a great movie by the standards of great cinema, but it’s great fun and good to see back on the big screen. An enjoyable 7.5/10.0

Film Review: The Gentlemen

Hugh Grant was really good, I was not expecting him to play a credible lowlife. Michelle Dockery was good, but I can only see her as Lady Mary, so it didn’t work for me (my fault). She was fantastic in Godless, so not sure why I wasn’t getting it here. Overall, a good film. A diamond geezer 7.5 monkeys ahhhht a...

Film Review: 1917

A good film, not a great story. Visually stunning, a great demonstration of the film makers art, but it has some odd lead casting. To be fair, it is a also bit flat and/or clumsy in places, particularly with some scenery / lighting. I was expecting higher, but 7.5/10.0

Film Review: Jo Jo Rabbit

What a fantastic start to 2020 movie-watching! A very funny, almost madcap, yet very sad and disturbing film. A great movie. A dark but fun 9.0/10.0

Film Review: Star Wars – The Rise of Skywalker

Throughly enjoyed this film. It was a bittersweet end to a saga I’ve loved almost my entire life. Sure, there were some dark periods in past movies (Jar Jar Binks…) but not here. This is a great movie that delicately ties up the series, with a nod (and several awesome cameos from stars of the original 1977 movie) to the...

Film Review: Jumanji – The Next Level

This is the kind of movie that makes you smile in the first few minutes, and keeps you smiling all the way through, with some laugh-out-loud moments as well. Great writing and pacing, great casting and acting, and a little sentimental. What more could you ask for! An easy 8.0/10.0

Film Review: Knives Out

What a great movie! A Whodunnit in the classic mould, with Daniel Craig channeling Poirot with perfection. This is how cinema should be: great casting, great plot, great pacing. The denouement is clever, but a little drawn out if I’m being picky, but enjoyable nonetheless. I particularly liked the classic Christie retrospective at the end, explaining the clues the writers...
