December 30, 2020 Film Review: Die Hard Turns out there were family members who hadn’t seen this before??? It was great to watch again, and while a bit dated it was worth it for great performances from Bruce Willis, and of course, Alan Rickman. A nostalgic 8.0/10.0 Categories Film Reviews
December 28, 2020 Film Review: The Christmas Chronicles 2 Not as good as the first one, but still great. Snake Plissken makes a great father Christmas once again, and Private Benjamin a decent Mrs Claus. A smiling 8.0/10.0 Categories Film Reviews
December 23, 2020 Film Review: The Christmas Chronicles What a great, feel-good movie! Kurt Russel is inspired casting, and the other cast members do a great job also. A well deserved 8.5/10.0 Categories Film Reviews
December 12, 2020 Film Review: Animal House I first watched this film the mid-1980s. Teenager-me thought it was really funny, and I watched it again with a certain nervousness to see if it had aged well, and if it was still funny. The good news is I think it has! It is definitely of its time: misogynistic, questionable racial sterotypes etc., but there is a kindness and... Categories Film Reviews
November 21, 2020 Film Review: Train To Busan: Peninsula What a shadow of the first one. A cliche-ridden, pale imitation of the majesty of the original, that goes short on the amazing zombie set-pieces, and long on terrible special effects and hammy, 1980s long stares at the camera and schlock hero death scenes. What a stinker. Barely 2.0/10.0 Categories Film Reviews
November 15, 2020 Film Review: Holidate Another Netflix special. Nothing too surprising here, fairly standard stuff. We have seen all this before, but that said, it is done well, and has a few laughs, a few smiles, and a few feels. I enjoyed it, but there are better movies in this genre. 7.0/10.0 Categories Film Reviews
November 11, 2020 Film Review: Peppermint A cracking action movie starring Jennifer Garner. Pretty standard thriller fare this, but I enjoyed it. Hopefully there will be a sequel. 7.5/10.0 Categories Film Reviews
November 5, 2020 Film Review: Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb (Netflix) A Netflix documentary on a remarkable dig at Saqqara in Egypt, and the discovery of an almost 4500 year old tomb that is in remarkable condition. The documentary is part about discovery (and some amazing finds), and partly about the people who work on the digs. Both equally fascinating and entertaining. A well deserved 9.0/10.0 Categories Film Reviews
November 3, 2020 Film Review: Extraction (Netflix) What it lacks in sophisticated story it more than makes up for in lengthy and violent action scenes. There are shades of The Raid, but not as well done. It was entertaining, and I would like to see more. 7.5/10.0 Categories Film Reviews
October 3, 2020 Film Review: Spenser Confidential (Netflix) There is little excuse for this film. This sort of writing and directing was crappy in the 1980s, and hasn’t improved with time. So many bad-cop-movie cliches and tropes. I was surprised Eddie Murphy, Jonathan Banks and Steven Berkoff didn’t have cameos. This barely deserves 4.5/10.0 Categories Film Reviews
